Genre: YA Fantasy

Cynthia has always hidden from her father’s hexes behind her older sister. When her family gains independence unheard of for women, she’s relieved that her days of harsh punishments are over. But as her seventeenth birthday approaches—the typical age to be sold to a new master—death threats endanger her sisters. She now faces two options: run or meet society’s expectations.

For once, Cynthia isn’t going to let her older sister shield her from the problem. She’s going to prove to herself, her sisters, and society that her family isn’t a threat to their traditions. She willingly chooses to be purchased by a new master. A bold step that takes her somewhere she never thought she would go and to a man she might possibly fall in love with. With his help, she may just find a way to save her sisters while discovering how to stand up for herself. If she lives long enough.

Amazon best-selling author Janeal Falor lives in Utah with her husband and three children. In her non-writing time she teaches her kids to make silly faces, cooks whatever strikes her fancy, and attempts to cultivate a garden even when half the things she plants die. When it's time for a break she can be found taking a scenic drive with her family, fencing, or drinking hot chocolate.

Serena may have gained her independence, but now her younger sister Cynthia is about to come of age.
Will Cynthia do as society decrees and sell herself to a warlock? Or does she have other ideas in mind?

This was a story about one girls fight for independence, and a life worth more than being someone else’s possession.

Cynthia was a girl who wanted to stop hiding, and stand up for herself, but she really did worry me at times. Even though the things that she wanted wouldn’t be unreasonable to us, in the world in which she lived things were very different, and I did wonder just how much trouble she could possibly get herself into! I understood her need for freedom, and her wish to be as powerful as any man, but dear me, she certainly took some risks.

The storyline in this wasn’t really what I was expecting, and while I understood the way that Cynthia tried to free herself, I also worried about what would happen because of it. It’s quite difficult to say more without possibly dropping spoilers, so let’s just say that having already been warned about her actions and their consequences by Zade, Cynthia pretty much flouted her abilities in the most public way possible, and also pretty recklessly, and I wasn’t the biggest fan of this sort of behaviour.
There was some romance, which was sweet in places, and we also got to see a little more of Serena and Zade which was good.
The ending to this was okay, and there was a little bit of a cliff-hanger. It will be interesting to see where the story goes from here.
Overall; okay story, with a risk-taking heroine,
6 out of 10.

  1. I think all people deserve freedom, but there are all kinds of ways to give it up without even knowing you're doing so. Bad relationships are a perfect example. Hope the next book is better.
