In the After (In the After #1) by Demitria Lunetta

In the After (In the After #1)
Blurb (From Goodreads):
They hear the most silent of footsteps.
They are faster than anything you've ever seen.
And They won't stop chasing you...until you are dead.

Amy is watching TV when it happens, when the world is attacked by Them. These vile creatures are rapidly devouring mankind. Most of the population is overtaken, but Amy manages to escape—and even rescue “Baby,” a toddler left behind in the chaos. Marooned in Amy’s house, the girls do everything they can to survive—and avoid Them at all costs.

After years of hiding, they are miraculously rescued and taken to New Hope, a colony of survivors living in a former government research compound. While at first the colony seems like a dream with plenty of food, safety, and shelter, New Hope slowly reveals that it is far from ideal. And Amy soon realizes that unless things change, she’ll lose Baby—and much more.

Rebellious, courageous, and tender, this unforgettable duo will have you on the edge of your seat as you tear through the pulse-pounding narrow escapes and horrifying twists of fate in this thrilling debut from author Demitria Lunetta.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

In the After (In the After #1)(Source: I own a copy of this book.)
When aliens land and start eating people, 13-year-old Amy stays in her house behind her electric fence, and eventually learns to hide. She can’t hide forever though.
Who or what are the aliens? And how the hell does Amy end up in a psychiatric ward?

This was an okay story, but it fell flat, and some of the characters were really stupid.

Amy was so stupid at the beginning of this book that it was a wonder she survived as long as she did. Aliens are killing people, so what do you do? Do you turn on all the lights in your house when every other house is dark, attracting the aliens right to you? Of course you do! Do you stand on your rooftop, watching the aliens kill people? Of course! Why not?! Do you go clomping around in broad daylight making lots of noise, and take a trip to the supermarket instead of ransacking a nearby house? Only if you’re Amy. I mean she just did one stupid thing after another, and I really did get pretty darn sick of it. Then as if to make matters worse, we met Amber, who was in fact even more stupid than Amy. Really.

The storyline in this was a little strange. We started with a post-apocalyptic survival story, but then this changed to a mystery story as to why the main character Amy somehow ended up in a psychiatric ward. This was odd to say the least, and this second part of the book was just so slow and frustrating! We as the reader had no idea what was going on, or why it was happening, and the answers took forever!
As it was, the answers all came in a rather rushed fashion in the last chapter, and I was less than impressed, especially when we found out the truth about the aliens. I’m really not sure I can be bothered to read the second book now.
Overall; disappointing,
6 out of 10
