The Body Finder (The Body Finder, #1) by Kimberly Derting

The Body Finder (The Body Finder, #1)
Blurb (from Goodreads):
Violet Ambrose is grappling with two major issues: Jay Heaton and her morbid secret ability. While the sixteen-year-old is confused by her new feelings for her best friend since childhood, she is more disturbed by her "power" to sense dead bodies—or at least those that have been murdered. Since she was a little girl, she has felt the echoes that the dead leave behind in the world... and the imprints that attach to their killers.

Violet has never considered her strange talent to be a gift; it mostly just led her to find the dead birds her cat had tired of playing with. But now that a serial killer has begun terrorizing her small town, and the echoes of the local girls he's claimed haunt her daily, she realizes she might be the only person who can stop him.

Despite his fierce protectiveness over her, Jay reluctantly agrees to help Violet on her quest to find the murderer—and Violet is unnerved to find herself hoping that Jay's intentions are much more than friendly. But even as she's falling intensely in love, Violet is getting closer and closer to discovering a killer... and becoming his prey herself.

The Body Finder (The Body Finder, #1)(Source: purchased used from
Violet has a special ability – she can sense dead bodies, and also their murderers.
She found her first dead human at age 8, and now it seems she’s about to find more.
With a serial killer on the loose, Violet is determined to try and find the killer the way only she can – by looking out for a death imprint which will identify him as the murderer. While the murderer seems obsessed with teen girls though, is Violet getting herself into more trouble than she bargained for? And will Violet be the next victim?

I enjoyed this book, and I interested to find out where the story will go from here.

Violet was a sweet girl, and I totally got why she felt like she should be doing something about the murders. As Violet was able to identify murderers in a way that no one else could, I could understand why sitting and doing nothing wasn’t an option for her, although I also saw how easily she could get herself into a sticky situation. I also knew that Violet just pointing to a killer wasn’t necessarily going to help with his conviction – Violet’s skills could hardly be called upon as evidence in a court of law.

I thought the romance between Violet and her best friend Jay was sweet, and it was nice to see a friendship-turned-romance that worked. I also liked that the romance was what Violet had wanted for a long time, and that she was finally getting what she had wanted, and that secretly Jay had felt the same way all along.

I liked the storyline in this book, although at times Violet had some really badly thought out ideas, such as going after murderers on her own, and wandering away from her search group and off into the woods alone! The idea that Violet might become a target for the killer was a bit of an obvious one, but it seemed like a natural next step as part of the story.

Overall; I enjoyed this book and am interested to see what Violet will get up to in the next instalment.
