Author/Book Spotlight (+ Giveaway) Our Blissful Bayou Beginnings by Danielle Peterson

Our Blissful Bayou Beginnings (The Duck And The Doe, #1)
Blurb (from Goodreads):
The Duck And The Doe is the tale of two immortal beings whose eternal love has soured a bit in the last two centuries. Written as memoir by the "hero," this novella is a musing on both what love is and how much America has changed since the early 19th century. The first volume deals with both the supernatural and the racism of the old American south. Told with humor and passion (and the occasional rant) the story of these strong characters, including a wealthy young lawyer and a clever courtsean, will change your idea of what "love forever'' really means.

Our Blissful Bayou Beginnings (The Duck And The Doe, #1)
(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis. Thanks to Danielle Peterson.)

This is the story of a man and a woman, and how they became immortal. The story is set in 1812, in New Orleans; Remi is a lawyer who falls in love with a African-American prostitute who he calls ‘Ma Bichette’, and his neighbours are horrified when he moves her into his home instead of marrying his white fiancĂ©.
When Ma Bichette is then murdered, Remi must find a way to bring her back, as he knows he can’t live without her.
What is the cost of immortality though? And can Remi and Ma Bichette afford the price?

I enjoyed this book. It’s a little different to what I normally read, but I actually liked it.

I thought that the ideas surrounding the immortality were a little different from the normal ‘vampires’, and I liked how the author had gone to lengths to make the setting of the year 1812 feel authentic. I also liked the way that the issues of racism were worked into the story.
I thought that this book was well-written, and achieved the memoir-style format well too.
Overall; an interesting tale of love and immortality.
7 out of 10.

Interview with the Author -

Danielle Peterson

Hi Danielle! Welcome to the Blog!

When did you start writing?
I recall that I spent the first amount of real money I made working for my Aunt and Uncle at a flea market to buy an ancient laptop when I was sixteen because I had all these words inside of me that needed to come out because I had lost track of them in my head. That was some eleven years ago.

What was your inspiration for ‘Our Blissful Bayou Beginnings’?
There was so much hooplah surrounding paranormal romances a year or so ago, and I was personally dissatisfied with them. Normal people are all kinds of wrecks in relationships, and I could imagine that immortals especially are so. I wanted to make a romance that was true and also could showcase the changes that the world, but America in particular, had gone through.

What three words would you use to best describe ‘Our Blissful Bayou Beginnings’?
Passionate, foolish man

What are your favourite things about the characters Remi and Ma Bichette?
Bichette is colorful and vivacious and daring and stunningly beautiful; all traits I admire in others because I lack them myself. I love Remi’s dry sense of humor.

‘Our Blissful Bayou Beginnings’ is the first book in a series, can you tell us when we can look forward to the release of the next book?
Very soon. I have a few days off before my new term starts and it’s all fired up to go. It’s called My Wholly Heartbreaking Heretic. I just need to pester the boyfriend into making a cover and upload it and write summaries for the ebook copies. Ugh, I hate writing summaries, I would rather write a whole new book.

Can you tell us about your other books?
My Wholly Heartbreaking Heretic takes place in the early 1970s in, for the most part, Arizona, Oregon, and Kansas. Remi and Bichette are on the outs with each other as the book opens, he living a quiet life in Arizona and her? He does not know where she is, but she comes roaring back into his life, whether he likes it or not. But he likes it, no matter how much he tries to deny it.
Can you tell us what you’re working on at the moment?
Part Three! Still untitled, but it’s about the American Civil War.

Other than your own, what are your favourite books?
I am really into Lovecraft at the moment. I am getting all these…ideas. I want to write a stand-alone Lovecraftian romance. It would be, for lack of a better word, fairly intense.
