Sheltered
Blurb (from Goodreads):
Living together unsupervised, five troubled teens confront demonic forces and are compelled to deal with their problems in distinctly different ways. Paranormal meets psycho meets Goth in this story of a supernatural haunting and budding love.

High school junior, Ben, hacks into his step-father's real estate holdings and provides rooms in an old two-story house to various outcasts: the schizophrenic kid, the angry Goth girl, and the homeless girl who worships him. When Megan needs a place to live she comes to the rooming house with a different set of problems and the ability to confuse and attract Ben.

One by one strange and mysterious occurrences stretch the teens’ beliefs in the supernatural. How they deal with demons, real and imagined, has tragic as well as redeeming consequences.

Interview with the author -

Debra Chapoton

Debra Chapoton
When did you start writing?
I started about ten years ago when I learned that a fellow teacher made his students write a novel during the school year. I can do that, I thought. So I tried it on summer vacation and it was so much fun it has become a passion.
What was your inspiration for ‘Sheltered’?
I’ve always believed there’s a whole other dimension of spirit beings: angels and demons. Jesus and his disciples were always casting out demons. It must have been a pretty big problem back then, but why don’t we hear about it now? The demon-possessed people of Bible times manifested the symptoms of epilepsy, dementia, super strength, schizophrenia, self-mutilation and so on. Aha, science and medicine have new names for what they used to call demon possession. But what if they’re wrong?
What three words would you use to best describe ‘Sheltered’?
Malevolent, mysterious, menacing. Oh, wait, can I change that to demons, dimples, and death?
What are your favourite things about the characters – Ben and Megan?
I love Ben’s soft-heartedness and his dimples. Megan has hidden strengths and she falls in love easily.
Is ‘Sheltered’ a standalone novel or will it be part of a series?
I left the ending open for a sequel if I’m asked or if the right inspiration strikes again.
Can you tell us what you’re working on at the moment?
I am setting up the marketing for “The Guardian’s Diary” which will probably be out next spring. It’s about a teen boy who was born with a gruesome deformity that causes him to drag his foot. He faces some tough challenges and dangerous decisions. The story is told through the eyes of his guardian angel.
Right now I am working on a young adult novel in which the teen characters maneuver through a supernatural world, yet there are neither angels nor demons in this story.
Other than your own, what are your favourite books?
I rush to read anything by Cindy Bennett, Stephenie Meyers, or Suzanne Collins.
