Fangs, Fur, and Fey Giveaway Hop - Death Cheater by Danielle Thorne

Death Cheater
Blurb (from Goodreads):
Athena Gray lives vicariously through her sister because people in general avoid her. Whether it's strange things like dead butterflies fluttering to life, or the time she saved her dying grandpa just by willing him to live, Athena knows that she is different. The only person who doesn't seem to think so is Dan, the most popular boy on Omega High School's baseball team. But even Dan can't understand the reason she acts haunted, until a spirit roaming the local historic burial mounds takes an interest in people Athena cares about.

(I promise there are both fangs and fur in this book!)

Death Cheater(Review Date: 20th February 2012)
(This book was given to me for free by the author on a read-to-review basis.)

Athena Gray has a secret. Sometimes if she really wants something dead to live again, it will mysteriously come back to life. At first it was just dead bugs when she was a child, but then it was a bird, and most recently her grandfather.

Now though Athena has another problem. A mysterious man and his black dogs with red eyes are stalking her. 'Aero' as he calls himself wants something from her, and he'll stop at nothing to get it. When he kidnaps her boyfriend Dan, and threatens to hurt him unless Athena does as he asks, Athena has no choice but to agree.

Aero calls Athena a 'death cheater' and asks her to 'convince' someone to pass over. Apparently her gift is not a one-way deal, not only can she bring things back to life, but she can also cause things to stop living. Doing as Aero asks, she helps an elderly woman with cancer to pass over to the other side. But Aero won't stop at just one, he wants Athena to keep doing this, and again threatens to hurt the people she loves if she doesn't do as he asks.

Athena can't do it though, and she has to find some way to stop Aero, whilst protecting her friends and family. With tensions rising at home though, her grades dropping, and everyone staring at her at school, Aero is just one problem too many for Athena to deal with.

I really enjoyed this book, it was well written, had good pace, and kept the reader interested. I really related to Athena as a character, and really felt for her and the problems she was facing. It definitely reminded me of what it's like to be a teenager, and I really liked that she had her own way of saying things, eg: 'oh cheese!'

The storyline itself was intriguing, the idea of being a death cheater was original and not something that I have come across before, and the romance element was light and didn't overpower the rest of the book.

Overall I really enjoyed this book, and would recommend it to anyone who likes young-adult fiction, or books with a paranormal/fantasy feel.
A definite 8/10! Enjoy!

Interview with the author

- Danielle Thorne

Hi Danielle! Welcome to the Blog!

When did you start writing?

I began writing as a child, entering poetry contests as a student and participating in Journalism off and on in high school. After dabbling with it through college and giving freelance work a try, my writing took a serious about fifteen years ago when I decided to commit to getting published nationally and get my name out there.

What was your inspiration for Death Cheater?

My parents used live near some ancient burial mounds around Pinson, Tennessee. Every time we visited them I felt the sacredness of the area. When I decided to write a paranormal about a young girl who could see spirits, they made a perfect pair.

What three words would you use to best describe Death Cheater?

Spooky, witty, adventure

What are your favorite things about Athena?

I love Athena's courage even in the face of insecurity and loneliness. She keeps her wry sense of humor no matter what happens, and although she'll take a lot of crap from people, she has her limits. When Athena stands up for herself, she does it with determination and fire. I admire that.

Can you tell us what you’re working on at the moment?

Right now I'm working on the sequel to Death Cheater, tentatively titled, The Cheated. It's about another girl like herself that feels Athena has stolen her life. I plan for Death Cheater to be a three book series and am enjoying watching Athena grow into a confident young adult and a courageous spirit.

You have several other books, are there any that are particularly close to your heart? / Can you tell us a bit about your other books?

Well, as an author, I love all my books! My best selling fan favorite is By Heart and Compass, a contemporary romance with a pirate treasure ship mystery. Turtle Soup is an environmental romance near and dear to my heart because it's set nearby at the Georgia Aquarium, and The Privateer, an Age of Sail historical will always be my darling. Probably because of the years I spent researching it!

Other than your own, what are your favorite books?
Hands down, I love the works of Jane Austen, and I am a diehard fan of the Master and Commander series by Patrick O'Brian. I also am a huge fan of the Harry Potter books and could read The Hobbit over and over.

Random Questions

-          What’s your favorite treat?

Frozen yogurt with all kinds of yummy toppings!

-          What’s your favorite place to read/write?

I write in the quiet of my upstairs office with my desk near a window so I can see outside when I need to space off. Or watch the birds eat my blueberries, haha.

-          If you won the lottery what would you most look forward to spending money on?

Taking care of my parents and traveling the world. There's so much I want to see and experience beyond the borders of my country. I would love to go on a humanitarian mission and help other people.

-          If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

What a great question, especially for someone who loves to experience new things. I thought about it hard and realized I really wouldn't want to live anywhere but where I am now, in central Georgia. We've lived here for six years and have wonderful friends and neighbors. We're blessed to live in a safe, average community with enough to do but it's not overrun by the world. The beach is a few hours one direction, the mountains the other way. I love Georgia!
